Twitter today released a Lite version of its popular app – which is really appreciated especially on countries with slow data connection like the Philippines. It was still in ‘beta’ mode, and is exclusively available here in the country. It was also said that Twitter is still evaluating whether to launch it in further markets.
Earlier this year, Twitter launched a PWA (Progressive Web App) mobile web site that uses less mobile data to work – simply means that just like its Facebook Lite counterpart, the app works even on 2G and 3G networks, which is especially useful in cases where data connections are intermittent, expensive or slow.
“The test of the Twitter Lite app in the Google Play Store in the Philippines is another opportunity to increase the availability of Twitter in this market,” said a Twitter spokesperson to TechCrunch
“The Philippines market has slow mobile networks and expensive data plans, while mobile devices with limited storage are still very popular there. Twitter Lite helps to overcome these barriers to usage for Twitter in the Philippines.”
The app itself appears to have many of the same basic functions of the main Twitter apps, but alongside these are few tweaks that will make it less of a data hog for users: for example, you can switch to a media-free mode to be able to select specific images and videos for downloading – which is deeply appreciated because we all know that data offers here in the Philippines are too small, right?
